Dimensions OHS recently came across an outstanding article about the effectiveness of sustainability reports written by Lynette McIntyre in CSR Wire. In it, the maturity of sustainability reports was discussed through the key attributes of maturity, found in a 2012 Psychology Today essay written by Author Doctor Tim Elmore. These attributes must be instilled in children and teenagers in the efforts to build and grow maturity for future success.
Sustainability reports must also feature these important elements in the efforts to correctly portray the impacts of performance, economy, environment and corporate responsibility. It is of tremendous value for both management and employees to do it with a sense of value, honesty and professionalism.
We believe that leadership can be viewed through these attributes as well. Maturity and seasoning go hand-in-hand as leadership grows and develops over the years. Wisdom comes through effort, time and challenge.
Experienced leadership understands the long-term tasks ahead for the organization, and the commitment and awareness for positive action. It is not influenced by positive press, professional flattery or success. Clarity in goals and decision making priorities are consistent and aligned exactly the same way. Ethics, servitude, and professional achievement connect through maturity and combine to build future plans and commitments. Multi-year goals signal this unique strategy of success that is simply not in every organization and business.
Mature leadership understands organizational consequences and challenges and is:
- Committed to long term goals and objectives
- Accepting of both good and bad experiences
- Focused on servitude and the spirit of humility to improve and engage employees
- Understanding of the big picture and the sharing of resources and priorities
- Wise enough to realize it does not have all the answers
- Responsible for finding ways to reward team and individual efforts that increase character and ethics
As Dr. Elmore states in his original article, “a mature person is teachable. The wiser they get, the more they realize they need more wisdom.” Leadership skills are indeed improved through learning and growing experiences.
