marinThere are thousands of careers and jobs across the country that can be considered low key yet extremely purposeful. The truth is that most people who work will never be famous movie celebrities, astronauts, or chief executive officers. Jobs and careers are not and never have been created equal. Most people have functionally necessary and rather unexciting occupations. Their daily responsibilities in today’s work environment are not glamorous but they are very much needed.

Now, how do people thrive in careers of often mundane normalcy? For most individuals, the answer is found in finding job satisfaction. The challenge is putting things in perspective and creating career happiness regardless of the work or responsibilities.

Dimensions OHS offers nine ways to build job and career satisfaction:

  • Focus on the positives: Every assignment has good things in it; we just have to look at the details.
  • Be a customer advocate: Providing excellent service to clients gives individuals great fulfillment as professionals go out of their way to please internal and external clients.
  • Be a team player: Partnering with others to get the job done is a great way to bring enjoyment to the job experience.
  • Be an expert: Learning as much as possible about the work that is done can makes people better. Skill and proficiency indeed make a difference.
  • Build relationships: Healthy associations help support and create healthy cultures; it is an important factor in wanting to come to work every day.
  • Work beyond the job description: Doing everything well and going beyond the job description can make a personal and professional difference.
  • Make the most of assignments: Outlook and attitude combine to tackle tasks and duties in the most positive of ways. A great attitude is contagious.
  • Enjoy the value of good work: Earninga livingis something to be proud of for anyone who puts in the effort. Individuals, families, and our economy count on it.
  • Consider the possibility of promotions and opportunities: The chances of growth and opportunity exist at every level of a business or organization. Hard work and a positive demeanor can pay off.

Regardless of position, skill and pay, it is how one thinks that creates the most success and satisfaction. Owning both the situation and the daily experience can be a very rewarding (Benjamin Schneider-San Diego State).

The key is finding value and personal success. Learn as much as possible about the industry, the organization, and the purpose of the position. Be willing to grow and maintain the most positive of attitudes. Satisfaction is an important derivative of performance. No matter the job or career, feel good at what you do. It is people not the job that makes the difference.
